I’m a Registered Clinical Counsellor with over 15 years of experience supporting children, youth, adults, and seniors impacted by trauma in Japan and Canada. I’m also an EMDRIA Certified Therapist and have completed Level 1 training in Internal Family Systems (IFS).I believe that people have an inherent capacity for healing and resilience. Just as our bodies naturally work to heal a wound, we often have an inner capacity to recover from difficult experiences. However, when we experience overwhelming or prolonged stress, trauma, or adversity, it can become difficult to heal on our own. People are not broken; but in those moments, they may need support because what they’ve experienced exceeded what they can manage alone.Because of your past and/or current experiences, you might feel puzzled about why you feel the way you do and who you really are. My clients often describe experiences such as:“I understand my thought patterns, but for some reason, I can’t change them.”“I don’t know where my anxiety or anger comes from.”“I can’t stop thinking about things that happened in the past.”“I keep choosing relationships that aren’t good for me.”I’m here to provide a safe and supportive space where we can explore what may be contributing to these challenges and what you need to feel more connected with yourself and access inner resilience. I help clients develop a deeper understanding of themselves, reconnect with their needs and values, and build confidence in their ability to navigate life’s challenges. My approach is warm, caring, non-judgmental, and collaborative. I welcome all parts of you, including the parts that may feel difficult, confusing, or unwanted. Depending on your needs and goals, our work may involve exploring past experiences, developing practical strategies for the present, or slowing down and connecting with what you notice in your body.I also prioritize culturally safe care and anti-oppressive practice. As a BIPOC cisgender woman, I bring curiosity and respect to each client’s experiences and recognize that our experiences are shaped not only by our personal histories, but also by culture, family, relationships, and broader social systems. I aim to create space for clients to explore these influences, strengthen their sense of agency, and reclaim parts of themselves that may have been suppressed or lost along the way.To support your goals, I integrate evidence-based approaches and tailor counselling to your individual needs. My training includes Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and attachment-based approaches.I have provided counselling and support through organizations including Atira Women’s Resource Society, Jericho Counselling Clinic, the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), and Vancouver Coastal Health. Earlier in my career, I also provided counselling, peer support, and community-based services through Women’s Counselling Kyoto, YWCA, Broadway Youth Resource Centre, and Vancouver Lower Mainland Multicultural Family Support Services.Alongside my clinical work, I’m passionate about advocacy and community initiatives. I am a co-founder of Kamome Club, a community initiative supporting Japanese people who have experienced domestic violence in Canada. I have also facilitated workshops on topics such as stress management, trauma-informed practice, and culturally responsive care for communities, healthcare professionals, and educators in Japan and Canada. Through both my clinical and community work, I’m committed to contributing to a more connected, compassionate, and caring community. For inquiries, please contact me at yui.counselling@gmail.com
