I was born in Montreal Quebec on Sept. 14, 1958 (currently 66 years old) to parents Lois and Roy Russell. My father passed away suddenly on August 24, 1974. I was 3 weeks shy of turning 16 years old and my life course changed in an instance. As a consequence, out of a need for family support, my mother moved to Toronto, Ontario on July 1, 1975 and my life started a new course.I graduated from high school in 1977 and attended College for two years to gain a diploma as a legal secretary. Between 1979-1986, I worked in a few downtown law firms to support myself. In 1986, my then boyfriend, now husband, moved to Waterloo, Ontario so that I could attend university at the University of Waterloo. I completed my first year in Health Studies and then took a break to return to the legal field as a law clerk in a Waterloo law firm. My husband and I bought out first home in 1987 in Waterloo and we married on September 17, 1988. In September, 1990, I made the decision to return to university with the goal of becoming a Social Worker. I enrolled in the Social Development Studies program at the University of Waterloo and graduated with my Bachelor of Arts degree in 1992. In September, 1993, I started a two years Master in Social Work Degree at the University of Toronto and graduated in the spring of 1995.In September 1995, I started a one year Social Work Fellowship program at The Hinck’s Institute to gain more specialized training in child and adolescent mental health and then worked one year as a Social Worker in a children’s community agency located in Etobicoke. In January 1998, I secured a clinical social work position in the Child and Adolescent outpatient mental health clinic at Markham Stouffville Hospital and retired on January 31, 2025 after 27 years’ of service. Since the spring of 2022, I have been an Associate therapist offering therapy in two community clinics located in Markham and Whitby. I receive client referrals from these two clinics. I am currently in EMDR therapy to process some traumatic incidences in my life, including the early death of my father. I am doing this as part of my EMDR training to experience the power of the modality in addition to my own personal processing.I am also dealing with an elderly mother whom has dementia and is waiting for a long term care facility in an ALC bed in a hospital, and my husband has significant medical issues which have impacted on his day to day functioning. I am very proud of my accomplishments in completing the EMDR basic training and am currently engaged in the certification process with an EMDRIA Approved Consultant.
