Better Minds Counselling

My approach to therapy is inclusive, neuroaffirming, trauma-responsive, and client-centered. I recognize that our experience of stress, trauma, and mental wellbeing is unique, inevitably shaped by relational, biological, developmental, ecological, cultural, historical, systemic, ancestral, and spiritual factors. I assist clients as they learn to contextualize distress, develop self compassion, discover activities which support their holistic wellbeing, and draw on their innate capacity for self-healing.My practice is primarily informed by the neurodivergent affirming practice framework and EMDR (eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing). I additionally incorporate elements of IFS (internal family systems) therapy and polyvagal theory, and I encourage clients to bring in their own culturally-based and/or spiritually relevant healing practices. With my younger clients I use both guided and non-directive play-based techniques. These recognize play as a child’s natural language to learn about, communicate, and process emotions. This involves the use of imaginative play, creative and sensory activities to process trauma and big emotions, to learn how to navigate social situations and regulate their nervous system and, above all, to find joy in and celebrate their authentic selves. My goal is to move beyond “one size fits all” models of therapy, to work with you to explore a path to healing which is holistic, empowering, respectful, and meaningful.
