Joseph Mercer

Joey Mercer, MA, RP (Qualifying), is an EMDR-trained Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) providing virtual psychotherapy across Ontario and in-person therapy in Hamilton, Ontario. He holds a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University and has experience supporting clients in inpatient, outpatient, group, and individual treatment settings.Joey specializes in working with adults and young adults experiencing the effects of trauma, including childhood trauma, complex trauma, attachment wounds, abuse, grief and loss, and addiction-related trauma. He also supports individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, eating disorders, substance use concerns, and challenges related to self-worth, identity, and emotional regulation.Using a trauma-informed and client-centred approach, Joey integrates Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy to help clients process distressing experiences that continue to affect their present lives. He believes that many symptoms—including anxiety, emotional reactivity, negative self-beliefs, relationship difficulties, and addictive behaviours—can be understood as adaptive responses to overwhelming life experiences. Through EMDR, clients can safely reprocess these experiences, reduce emotional distress, and develop healthier ways of relating to themselves and others. In addition to EMDR, Joey draws from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and Humanistic approaches to tailor treatment to each client’s unique needs and goals.Joey has spent the past two years working primarily with Indigenous clients in community mental health. As a non-Indigenous therapist, he approaches this work with cultural humility and a commitment to honouring Two-Eyed Seeing (Etuaptmumk), recognizing the value of both Indigenous and Western ways of knowing.Joey strives to create a safe, collaborative, and non-judgmental space where healing can occur at a pace that feels right for each client. He believes that recovery and healing are not things that happen to us, but processes we actively participate in. His role is to walk alongside clients as they process the past, reconnect with their strengths, and move toward a more meaningful and fulfilling future.
