Maryam Mills

EMDR Certified Therapist

MasterMind Brain Optimization Centres

Maryam is a Registered Clinical Counsellor, holds a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology and is Board Certified by BCIA for Neurofeedback. She is certified in Family Mediation from the Justice Institute of BC and is also a certified Parenting Workshop Facilitator. She works from an attachments perspective when working with individuals, couples and families. Using cognitive behavioral therapy, sensorimotor, and mindfulness therapies, she works with clients dealing with grief, trauma, anxiety, depression, personality disorders and addiction. The ultimate goal is to work cooperatively to help clients develop strategies to deal with obstacles inviting more fulfilment in their lives. Maryam is also a member of Psychology Today.

Additionally, Maryam is certified in Couples Therapy by the Gottman Institute in Seattle – an approach focused on repairing the relationships within the family. The goals of Gottman Method Couples Therapy are to disarm conflicting verbal communication, increase intimacy, respect, and affection, remove barriers that create a feeling of stagnancy in conflicting situations, and create a heightened sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship.

Maryam also has training and practical experience working with children with goal orientation, resolving conflict within the family, helping the whole family support those with ADHD, and working with children affected by damaged relationships within the family. She has also worked with clients with more intense needs including directly with at risk youth dealing with identity, substance abuse, self-esteem, self-harm, depression and trauma issues.
To better inform her trauma work, Maryam also has specialized training in sensorimotor concepts and techniques from the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute which provides her advanced tools for assisting clients with trauma. Theoretically grounded in neuroscience and attachment research, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy includes the body in psychotherapy as both a source of information and target for intervention. A mindfulness-based approach is used to treat emotional and cognitive experiences that facilitates access to a deeper authentic experience.

Maryam also has training to help clients using EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). EMDR is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference.
