Helen J Butlin

EMDR Certified Therapist

Helen J Butlin, RP, PhD

I practice an integrative approach to psychotherapy and work with clients personal values, goals, beliefs, spirituality, hopes, insights and strengths. My doctoral research studied the ‘wisdom-making’ capacity in the human psyche focusing on the perspectives on how wisdom was perceived by women living with ovarian cancer. The study took place within my ten year practice in a large regional oncology treatment centre. The research aimed to draw into visibility the ways that the human psyche, through acute mortality awareness, can provoke the need for finding personal wisdom for navigating physical, emotional and mental suffering and thus distill our inner capacity to form practical life wisdom that sustains and guides our choices in daily life.

Our focus in therapy sessions is discovering and activating your own, often submerged personal wisdom for healing and shaping your life in a way that draws on your core strengths. We work on cultivating your awareness of your own capacity to sustain your connection to finding your own ‘wise-way’ through whatever adversity, mental health challenges, burnout, trauma you may have experienced or be currently facing.

My training integrates a variety of approaches with certification in Mindful Self-Compassion in Psychotherapy, Polyvagal Therapy, Existential-Spiritual (meaning centred) Psychotherapy, and EMDR certification with additional training for complex trauma and structural dissociation. My clients tend to be growth orientated individuals who seek healing from the past in order to harness their strengths and wisdom for living as fully as possible into a future that feels worth creating and living.

From over 20 years of personal experience as a health care practitioner within various teaching hospital institutions in Ontario, my practice has come to provide specialized and experienced support to health care practitioners and physicians living with the impact of moral injury, structural/systemic oppression, and the impact of toxic workplace dynamics.

It can take courage to reach out but few of us can navigate life without caring, guiding support from those who’ve been through their own challenges and who have trained professionally in supporting others. I bring genuine compassion to our work together.

Know that you’ll meet caring guide for (re)discovering your strengths, hopes, balance & wisdom.
