Jennifer Olson

EMDR Basic Training

Yukon Therapy

My name is Jen Olson. I have been working as a counsellor/therapist for about 20 years. My interest in trauma and resiliency began when I started working at an AIDS awareness organization with street-involved youth and people involved in the sex trade. During that time, I began to see the intersection between trauma and other determinants of health. I have provided play therapy to children impacted by domestic violence, worked with youth from homes with substance abuse, and worked with people from Indigenous communities impacted by intergenerational trauma. I received my Master of Social Work degree from Dalhousie University in 2010 while working as a therapist in a small, northern, isolated community in the Northwest Territories. I moved to Whitehorse, Yukon 16 years ago and have worked almost exclusively with Indigenous survivors of intergenerational trauma, as well as direct trauma. When I began working as a counsellor, I was a generalist and worked with a variety of issues: addictions, abuse, anxiety, depression, relationship issues. Over time, my interest became more focused on trauma. I was introduced to EMDR in 2015-2016. Since that time, I have come to appreciate the elegance and effectiveness of EMDR. I consult monthly with Robin Shapiro and have learned about integrating ego state work with EMDR. I have learned tools to screen for and work with dissociation. My primary interest is now EMDR and trauma.
