EMDR Basic Training

Ashley Davidson Psychotherapy

Hi, I’m Ashley – a social worker and EMDR therapist who provides brief and ongoing virtual psychotherapy to folks in need of mental health and emotional support. I work predominantly with adolescents, young adults and adults by video. In supporting folks, our initial session involves a discussion about confidentiality, consent, your general goals for therapy and an assessment/history taking by myself to get to know you in the context of your life – and what you think is most important for me to know about you. It can take time to build a rapport/therapist-client relationship, and my approach is to match you at a pace that makes sense for you.

I am trained in numerous therapy modalities including cognitive behaviour therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy (I consider myself DBT-informed), mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT). Additionally, I incorporate tools, skills and experiential approaches from acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), as well as internal family systems part’s work.My practice is beginning to lean especially into EMDR — Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy. It is a form of therapy that focuses on reprocessing distressing, often traumatic memories to alleviate many symptoms, including post-traumatic stress, anxiety and depression. “Parts work” or internal family systems (IFS) therapy interventions are also very frequently woven into the work that I do in sessions.

My main area of focus is supporting folks who have experienced interpersonal forms of trauma, that is harm caused in social relationships. This includes attachment and developmental trauma (i.e. in childhood, upbringing by primary caregivers, prominent adults in one’s life), bullying, relationship breakdowns, intimate partner violence, as well as sexual abuse/sexual trauma. In addition to interpersonal trauma, I support folks with grief and loss, pet loss, and other life-altering experiences and transitions. For me, what is considered “traumatic” depends on the individual and their experiences: no one person responds to the same situation identically, and each person’s reaction deserves acknowledgement.

My approach is client-centered, anti-oppressive & strengths-focused. What this means is that I work collaboratively with you, on your specific goals, in a way that is meaningful for you, and come from a place of compassion, nonjudgement and respect for your personal lived-experiences & the wisdom that comes from these things.
