Emily Smith is a Registered Social Worker with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW). Emily has her Masters of Social Work from the University of Toronto, with a specialization in Children and Their Families. Prior to her Masters of Social Work, she graduated from the University of Guelph with a double major in English and Sociology. Emily is a Certified Play Therapist and a member of the Canadian Association for Play Therapy (CAPT). She is also a member of the Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW). She is an upstanding member of all of her professional registrations.

Emily offers a safe and supportive therapeutic environment where children, youth, adults, couples, and families can process the struggles and barriers they may be encountering in their life. Emily will work side-by-side with you to manage life’s stressors. She offers a person-centered and strengths-based approach. Through collaborative goal-setting, she works with clients to tailor the intervention to each individual’s needs. She believes that people are the experts of their lives, and believes in hope and resiliency. She has strong interpersonal and attuned listening skills that enable her to build trusting relationships. Emily’s clients have told her that she is caring and compassionate. Emily is passionate about supporting children and their families in their healing journeys, helping them to achieve their goals, and strengthen their functioning and wellbeing as individual members and as a family unit.

Emily uses Play Therapy in her work with children. Emily also practices principles and techniques from other modalities such as: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Solution-Focused Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Emily practices from a trauma-informed and attachment-based lens.

Emily has volunteered for the Distress Line, Reach out Centre for Kids, Ontario Early Years Centre, Big Brothers Big Sisters, within the elementary and high school system, with newcomers to Canada, with youth in conflict with the law who were struggling to manage their mental health, with adults living with mental health challenges, and with students at the University of Guelph and the University of Toronto. In addition to her volunteer experiences, Emily’s passion for helping others and for ongoing education led her to her work as a Clinical Distress Research Assistant on a cyber bullying research study led by the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Social Work: Motivations for Cyber Bullying: A Longitudinal and Multi-Perspective Inquiry.
