BIOGRAPHY – Dr. Soraya Centeno

Dr. Soraya Centeno, originally from Spain, embarked on her journey at the age of 16 when she left her homeland to study abroad. Her academic path led to a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, a Master’s in Counselling Psychology, and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience, focusing on the brain’s mechanisms behind human motivation and the intricate connections between cognitive pathways and emotions.

Dr. Centeno’s career took her across various U.S. states and Canadian provinces before settling in British Columbia in 2013. In 2015, she joined VICCIR (Victoria Island Counselling Centre for Immigrants and Refugees), fueled by her deep commitment to support immigrants and refugees of all ages and cultural backgrounds.

Driven by her passion, she earned certifications as a trauma professional in 2018 and became EMDR certified in 2020. Currently, she serves as a clinician and supervisor at VICCIR, where she trains master-level counselling students from universities across Canada while continuing to work with youth and families. Over nearly a decade of working with immigrants and refugees, Dr. Centeno has developed a keen interest in resilience and childhood attachments.

As a devoted mother of two boys, she strives to strike a balance between her career and family life while nurturing her love for travel and spending quality time with her loved ones.
